Many races from around the world have developed
images and icons to adorn their buildings Some of these are decorative and
represent gods or respected leaders whilst others serve more practical uses.
For example the North American Indians, who
observed nature and the relationships between all aspects of their environment
, used the Medicine Wheel. The wheel concentrates universal energies that we
each use for healing, understanding and creating positive thoughts and
experiences. The major compass points of the wheel are
represented by totems: plant, mineral, animal, colour.
In Mexico the Aztec Calendar was
discovered during excavations in Mexico City & is a principle
remnant of the city. The central figure is the sun god whose
extended tongue is in the form of a dagger representing his need for blood. The
first circle beyond the god contains 20 symbols of the 18 months of the Aztec
calendar. At the bottom the sun god is in profile. Other symbols represent
various deities and events.
The Temple Warrior Plaque (IND07) decorated the
doorway of a temple in the Mayan city of Chichen Itza. The warrior is dressed
and armed in a similar fashion to Toltec Warriors (FIG09 FIG10) and the Mayan
musicians (PLA13) as the Toltec influence was great in some Mayan territories.
